Objectives
The purpose of this course is for the student to acquire basic knowledge of concepts related to research and research processes in Caring Science/Nursing. Furthermore the student shall acquire knowledge of qualitative methods, research ethics and basic concepts related to Caring Science/Nursing. The student shall also develop ability in the critical exchange of information at a scientific level.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course the student shall be able to:
1 Identify the area of research along with basic concepts of interest to Caring Science/Nursing
2 Clarify and describe qualitative research methods used in the Caring Science discipline
3 Describe different forms of data collection and analysis when using qualitative data methods
4 Identify and describe the different stages in the research process
5 Describe principles of research ethics related to current policy documents
6 Critically scrutinise scientific articles
7 Identify a research problem in Caring Science/Nursing and formulate an objective and also discuss and examine fellow students' papers
Course content
Concepts in the research area of Caring Science/Nursing as well as research methods. Data collection methods, research ethics and research processes. Identifying and problematising research problems that can be related to the main field of study.
Tuition
The course is taught by means of individual studies, lectures, seminars and group assignments.
Specific requirements
Full Credits from the two first years in DDBNP at Rangsit University and a TOEFL test result, minimum score cBt 173, pBT 500 or iBT 61 or IELTS score 5,0 and no band score below 4,5 or CU-TEP with a minimum of 535.
Examination
Exercise (PM01), 3.5 credits, written paper (in pairs); presentation and arguments concerning the students' own paper and also critical scrutiny of fellow students' papers (learning objective 7). Marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
Seminar (SEM1), 2 credits, active participation in all seminars during the course and also critical scrutiny of scientific articles (learning objectives 1-7). Marks Pass (G).
Examination (TEN1), 2 credits, individual written examination (learning objectives 1-6). Marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
For a Pass with Distinction on the course, a Pass with Distinction is required on PM01 and TEN1. For further details consult the Study Guide.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
