Objectives

The purpose of the course is to provide deeper knowledge related to financial accounting concepts and how different transactions are handled within the financial accounting area. To increase the knowledge on how to prepare true and fair reports the course also comprehends more detailed valuation considerations from the financial accounting area.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course the student will be able to:
- describe and solve more detailed issues in the production and analysis of financial reports
- have gained deeper ability to calculate correct values within the financial accounting
- give an account of and calculate different ways to finance and manage the business
- enter transactions into a computerized bookkeeping system

Course content

The course targets more advanced concepts, theories and models compared to the introductory courses. Equity and valuation concepts are presented and discussed using the perspective of the limited liability company. Shares as a means for financing a business is also covered. Complex valuation issues within the financial accounting area is discussed from an IFRS perspective.

Tuition

The course is conducted in English and consists of lectures and seminars. Exercise sessions provide opportunities to practice financial accounting skills.

Specific requirements

Business 30 credits, including at least 7,5 credits in accounting which may be achieved by studying the courses Financial Accounting I 7,5 credits, Cost and Management Accounting I 7,5 credits or similar course. At least 22.5 credits must be completed at the beginning of the course. In addition English B/English course 6 is required.

Examination

Exercise (INL1), 1.5 credits, marks Pass (G)
Examination (TEN1), 6 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG)

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
