Objectives
The objective of the course is for students to adopt a historical perspective on British and American literature and to broaden and intensify their awareness of the role of literature in language studies. The course also aims at providing a historical perspective on language, as well as broadening and intensifying the students’ knowledge of language pedagogy and linguistics.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students are expected to be able to:
(with regard to the module Literature 2, 7.5 credits)
- describe key periods and genres of English-language literature
- apply knowledge of literary and historical periods, including their characteristic features, to the reading and analysis of individual works of literature
- use scientific sources and relevant methods to support the interpretation of works of literature in speech and writing
- apply in practice, and reflect upon, theories and methods in language pedagogy
(with regard to the module Linguistics 2, 7.5 credits)
- define and apply key concepts regarding the study of human language, with a focus on English
- describe and discuss key theories in linguistics, including theories on language learning
- practically apply, and reflect upon, theories and methods in language pedagogy
Course content
The course comprises two modules worth 7.5 credits each.
Module 1, Literature 2:
- overview over British and American literary history
- introduction to scientific methods in literature studies
- theory and method in the teaching of literature
- field studies
Module 2, Linguistics 2:
- introduction to a range of linguistic fields, including the theory and practice of language pedagogy and English as a foreign language
Tuition
The teaching and learning activities include lectures, seminars, tutorials, field studies and home assignments, with significant use of ICT. Active participation in all scheduled activities is mandatory.
Specific requirements
English for English Teachers 1 and 2 (at least 22.5 credits by the start of the course) or the equivalent.
Examination
Literature 2. Spoken and written assignments (INL1), 4.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
Literature 2. Field study report (INL2), 1.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
Linguistics 2. Spoken and written assignments (INL3), 1.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
Literature 2. Preparation for and active participation in scheduled activities (SEM1), 1.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
Linguistics 2. Preparation for and active participation in scheduled activities (SEM2), 1.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
Linguistics 2. Written exam (TEN1), 4.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
For a passing grade, the assignments need to be done in good English with regard to style, grammar and idiomaticity.
For a Pass with distinction (VG) on the course as a whole, the student needs to have earned that mark for a minimum of 9 credits.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
