Objectives
The objective of the course is for students to become more competent in spoken and written academic English, as well as language pedagogy. The course further aims at providing a historical perspective on language and language pedagogy, as well as on culture and society.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students are expected to be able to:
- give an account of the major sociocultural aspects of American and British history, relate these to contemporary language and culture, and reflect upon how language and society can be integrated in language teaching and learning
- give an account of the historical development of theory and practice in language pedagogy
- reflect upon the use of digital tools to promote learning
- analyze and produce written and spoken academic texts in English
- apply strategies for information retrieval and source use

Tuition
The teaching and learning activities include lectures, seminars, tutorials, field studies and home assignments, with significant use of ICT. Active participation in all scheduled activities is mandatory.
Specific requirements
English for English Teachers 1 and 2 (at least 22.5 credits by the start of the course) or the equivalent.
Examination
Language in Context. Written and spoken assignments (INL1), 5.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
Language in Context. Field study report (INL2), 1.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
Language in Context. Preparation for and active participation in scheduled activities (SEM1), 1.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
Language in Context. Written exam (TEN1), 6.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
For a passing grade, the assignments need to be done in good English with regard to style, grammar and idiomaticity.
For a Pass with distinction (VG) on the course as a whole, the student needs to have earned that mark for a minimum of 9 credits.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
