Objectives
The course gives basic knowledge and understanding of the modern view of Lean production. Improvement work through Lean with its philosophy and history is to be understood. Different methods and tools for improvements e.g. Pareto diagrams and Six Sigma to be understood.
Learning outcomes
The student must be able to present her:
- understanding of Lean production and its basic philosophy
- describe and give examples from challenges at introduction of Lean to an organization
- solve and present industrial applications based on the course theory
- ability to perform Pareto studies
- ability to perform relationship charts at problem solving
- ability to participate in improvement work according to the Six Sigma model
- understanding of the importance of visions and to handle members different values in group work, e.g. at implementation of Lean in a company
- perform and present a field application of Value Flow Analysis
Course content
Introduction to improvement by Lean
Improvement work through pre-studies
Historical development of Lean up to automation within Lean
The understanding of the philosophy and principles of Lean Production including Just In Time
Process flow charts and Value Stream mapping
Enterprise value adding information and communication
OEE - maintenance and key figures regarding process efficiency
The way to Lean: tools and methods, DMAIC, Six Sigma, Pareto- and relationship charts
Examples from industrial applications
Tuition
The teaching will essentially include classroom lectures, group work, group home work and individual presentations of the group work and its results.

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
