Objectives
The objective of the course is for students to complete a work placement in an English-speaking country and thereby to enhance their generalizable knowledge regarding, among other things, spoken and written English in working life contexts, the culture and working life of the English-speaking country in question, as well as academic writing.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students are expected to be able to:
- give an account of sociocultural and communicative manifestations in an English-speaking country
- gather and analyze data
- analyze and produce spoken and written English texts belonging to different genres
- apply strategies for information searches and source use

Tuition
The course offers preconditions for both explicit and implicit learning. Teaching and learning mostly take place in the form of distance education, in an English-speaking country, with considerable use of ICT, as well as considerable individual work. Supervision is provided, individually or in groups.
Specific requirements
English 1, 30 credits (at least 22.5 credits by the start of the course) or the equivalent.
Examination
NÄR1, attendance at scheduled teaching, 1 credit; grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
PM01, report on sociocultural phenomena in the country of the work placement, 5 credits; grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
PRA1, work placement in an English-speaking country (PRA1), 5 credits; grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
PRO1, written project report, 4 credits; grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
For a VG on the course as a whole, a VG is required on PM01 and PRO1.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
