Objectives
The purpose of the course is to give a basic knowledge of and proficiency in oral communication, partly by establishing a theoretical basis in argumentation and communication, and partly by exercises in the application of the rules, with a focus on specific oral contexts, mainly institutional.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this course the student should be able to:
- have a command of the basic terminology of argumentation and communication,
- apply the above-mentioned terminology in the analysis of oral communication patterns,
- show awareness of the importance of body language and prosody in spoken discourse,
- conduct conversations adapting to different purposes and situations,
- identify and characterise conversational roles from a power perspective.

- Power aspects in oral communication
- Oral communication patterns in some different contexts, mainly institutional. Which contexts are dealt with is partly dependent on the participants' wishes and needs.
Tuition
The course, in which attendance is mandatory, is taught by means of lessons, seminars, role play, oral exercises and a field assignment. In addition continual response work in base groups is included.
Examination
Field assignment (PRO1), 3 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG)
Continual assessment within the course (SEM1), 4.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG)
In order to earn a VG on the course a student must earn a VG on SEM1.
In order to obtain a Pass mark the assignments must demonstrate a competent command of the language.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
