Objectives
The aim of Science and Design is to provide a basic orientation in the philosophy of science, research methodology, and scientific writing. The course is re-actualizing previously introduced communication theories, for a critical discussion in a scientific context.
Learning outcomes
After the course, the students should be able to:
- account for, and critically discuss, significant directions during the 20th century, within the field of philosophy of science (important concepts and fundamental questions)
- critically discuss essential communication theories and their relevance for information design
- show familiarity with, and critically discuss, established scientific methods in information design
- demonstrate practical and theoretical competence regarding basic elements in the scientific research process
Course content
The course will focus on, for example, increasing the student´s ability too systematic argumentation, critical analysis, discussions of theories and methods, use of references and sources. At large, the course is giving the students time to reflect and increase their consciousness on scientific aspects on information design.
The course is both theoretical and practical, and consists of lectures, seminars and discussions.

Group assignment (GRU1), 1.5 ECTS credits, marks Pass (G)

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
