Objectives
English for Academic Purposes 3 is designed to provide support in English proficiency for people who do not intend to study English as an academic subject. The course provides an opportunity to practice upper-intermediate and advanced skills in English.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this course the student should be able to:
- demonstrate an ability to read and listen to authentic spoken and written English
- demonstrate an ability to use advanced English lexis, grammar and register with accuracy, in the production of written and spoken academic texts
Course content
The course focuses on the English grammar, lexis, and other linguistic features found in different kinds of authentic academic texts. These texts form the basis for discussions, presentations, grammar exercises and written assignments designed to practise advanced English proficiency.
Tuition
The course is taught through lectures and seminars in English. Participation in all scheduled activities is mandatory.

English B or English 6.
Examination
Written and spoken assignments (INL1), 3 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG)
Seminar. Preparation for and active participation in all scheduled activities. (SEM1), 1.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG)
Written examination (TEN1), 3 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG)
In order to earn a VG for the course a student must earn a VG for TEN1 and INL1.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.

The course cannot be included in a degree together with HEN100, HEN101, HEN102 or HEN103, or English courses on the 200, 300 or 400 levels.
