Objectives
The student shall acquire basic knowledge of the history of social welfare, policy processes, systems and organisations along with welfare models in Scandinavia. The student shall further acquire basic knowledge of the welfare state, social politics, public economics and administration and also be able to give examples of laws and regulations in different authorities and organisations. Included in the course is also a theoretical perspective regarding social work and the welfare state.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course the student shall be able to:
1 Account for different methods for social welfare systems
2 Describe and analyse organisations and professions in welfare and health care
3 Discuss and analyse how social welfare systems can be of importance to the independence, integrity and dignity of the human being
4 Describe and discuss policy processes of importance to welfare and health care
5 Account for laws, regulations and other documents of particular importance to welfare and health care
6 Account for the living conditions from a welfare and health perspective
Course content
The development and the present situation regarding the welfare state and the public economy Theoretical models for welfare state regimes and welfare systems
Systems and organisations for welfare and health along with professional roles within the welfare and health sector
Public administration; some examples of organisations and processes
Strategies and approaches for policies and implementation of preventive work for welfare and health
Social policies of importance to welfare and health along with welfare and health work
Tuition
The course is taught by means of lectures, seminars along with individual and group exercises.
Specific requirements
60 credits in Caring Science/Nursing or Public Health Science or Social Work or equivalent and a TOEFL test result, minimum score cBt 173, pBT 500 or iBT 61 or IELTS score 5,0 and no band score below 4,5 or CU-TEP with a minimum of 535.
Examination
Exercise (INL1), 3.5 credits, individual written assignment in welfare and health (learning objectives 1-6). Marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
Seminar (SEM1), 4 credits, seminars 1-4 (learning objectives 1-6). Marks Pass (G).
For a Pass with Distinction on the course, a Pass with Distinction is required on INL1. For further details consult the Study Guide.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
