Objectives
The course shall give the student basic knowledge and skills in the field of trend tracking as part of environmental analysis.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course the student shall be able to:
- give an account of the theories and methods used in trend tracking and trend analysis
- act methodologically according to the 7-step-model or equivalent in a trend tracking process
- use a selection of web-based search and scanning tools
- give an account of trend spotting function in an organization
- apply source evaluation to gathered information
- take a nuanced reflective stance upon the trends of today and tomorrow in a wider environmental context
Course content
The students shall through theoretical studies, report writing and project work gain insight into the field of trend tracking, covering its dispositions, tools and techniques.
- Source evaluation with emphasis on web-based sources.
- Research basics (covering texts, digital media and real world research).
- The 7-step model for Business Intelligence and trend tracking
- Collection, sorting, compilation, analysis and presentation.
- Project work with group assigned environmental analysis, trend tracking and presentations.
Tuition
The tuition is carried out through lectures, individual and group assigned tasks, seminars and computer based exercises and one mayor presentation. Great emphasis is put on information handling and independent group learning.

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
