Objectives
This course enhances previously acquired knowledge and skills with regard to linguistic and literary theory and analysis, while simultaneously developing didactic perspectives on these fields.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students are expected to be able to:
(with regard to Discourse Analysis, 7.5 credits)
- describe key discourse-analytical concepts and methods and apply them on spoken and written texts representing different types and genres
- give an account of how scientific discourse analysis is carried out in practice and how it influences the knowledge in the field
- reflect upon acquired knowledge in a structured manner and practically relate it to future professional activities, with a special focus on examination and assessment
(with regard to Imaginations, 7.5 credits)
- define and describe key concepts in various fields of literary theory
- read and discuss different examples of literary theory and criticism
- read, analyze and interpret literary texts from different periods, as well as to define and apply suitable strategies for literary analysis and criticism in speech and in writing
- plan and carry out a limited literary investigation
- reflect upon acquired knowledge in a structured manner and practically relate it to future professional activities
Course content
Module 1, Discourse Analysis:
- overview over linguistic discourse analysis
- in-depth studies in one or more areas within discourse analysis
- textual analysis
- possible applications to English teaching and examination in school
- field studies
Module 2, Imaginations:
- contemporary and canonical literary texts from different genres
- introduction to literary theory and selected examples of literary criticism
- possible applications to English teaching in school
- field studies
Teaching
Tuition
The teaching and learning activities comprise lectures, seminars, tutorials, field studies and assignments, with significant use of ICT. Active participation in all scheduled teaching activities is mandatory.
Specific requirements
English for English Teachers 1-2 (30 credits in total) and a minimum of 22.5 credits from English for English Teachers 3-4, or the equivalent.
Examination
Discourse Analysis. Spoken and written assignments (INL1), 2.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
Discourse Analysis. Preparation for and active participation in course activities (SEM1), 2.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
Discourse Analysis. Home exam (TEN1), 2.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
Imaginations. Essay (INL2), 2.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
Imaginations. Portfolio of spoken and written analyses (INL3), 5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
For all forms of examination, students are expected to express themselves in correct and idiomatic English.
For a Pass with distinction (VG) on the course as a whole, student needs to have earned that mark for a minimum of 10 credits.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
