Objectives
The course aims to provide students with basic knowledge of and skills in the science of the strength of materials and to teach methods for calculating the action and effect of loads on constractions. Furthermore, the course aims to develop a greater understanding of the importance of internal forces and how they affect the load-carrying structures in a building.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course the student should be able to
- demonstrate the ability to use mathematical methods for calculating the magnitude of the internal forces of load-carrying structural elements
- calculate the magnitud of deformation of load-carrying structural elements
- describe the effect of different external loads on load-carrying structural elements and explain the concepts of external loads and internal forces
Course content
Analysis of structural equilibrium. Calculations of internal forces such as lateral forces, moments and normal forces for beams, columns, walls and truss of both statically determinate and indeterminate structures. Deformation calculations. Comparison between the elastic and plastic analyses. The distribution of load on constructions.
Tuition
Lectures and exercises.
Examination
Examination (TEN1), 6 credits, marks 3, 4 or 5
Exercise (ÖVN1), 1.5 credits, marks Pass (G)
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
