Objectives
The purpose of this course is to consolidate and develop the student's knowledge of English grammar and vocabulary in a business context and further to provide knowledge of business and business communication in the English-speaking world.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this course the student should be able to:
- apply business vocabulary in oral and written work in English,
- apply different and appropriate oral presentation techniques in a business context,
- demonstrate different and appropriate types of business writing in English,
- demonstrate understanding of English key grammatical constructions in a business context,
- recognise intercultural differences in business communication
Course content
Oral techniques:
- presentations of current business issues
- interview skills
Writing techniques:
- business communication
- grammar exercises in a business context
- exercises in the usage of business terminology, phrases and expressions
Tuition
The course is taught by means of seminars, homework assignments, lectures, discussions, group exercises, and tasks performed by students in class.

English B or English 6.
Examination
Written and spoken assignments (INL1), 2.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG)
Preparation for and active participation in campus meetings (SEM1), 2.5 credits, marks Pass (G)
Written examination (TEN1), 2.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG)
In order to earn a grade of VG for the course a student must earn VG on TEN1 and INL1.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
