Objectives
The objective of the course is for students to develop transferable knowledge of and skills in English grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the student should be able to
- apply fundamental grammatical rules, grammatical terminology and an idiomatic vocabulary in spoken and written English
- express him- or herself accurately and fluently in spoken English
- use dictionaries and other reference works and resources as a tool for continued development in language proficiency

- vocabulary knowledge in a broad perspective
- pronunciation and intonation
Tuition
The course provides both explicit teaching and the preconditions for incidental learning. Teaching consists of lectures, seminars, discussions, assignments and tasks during class time. Participation in all scheduled teaching is mandatory. Teaching on the course is partially ICT-based.

Examination
Exercise (INL1), 3 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Spoken and written assignments
Seminar (SEM1), 1 credits, marks Pass (G), Preparation for and participation in scheduled activities.
Examination (TEN1), 3.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG)
To receive a grade of Pass with Distinction for the whole course, the student must have earned that grade for INL1 and TEN1.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
