Objectives
The course provides basic knowledge and creates understanding for the modern view of the quality area, both within merchandise and service sectors. Customer centered development of activities, process thinking and leadership for quality should be understood. Different methods like customer centered planning statistical process control and experimental planning, may, in basic cases, be applied.
Learning outcomes
After the finished course the student should be able to:
- describe the concept of quality, quality control, quality steering, quality assurance as well as the meaning of "Total Quality Management" (TQM)
- carry our improvement projects according to the Six-Sigma model
- apply the 7 QC-tools
- apply "Statistical experimental planning" (Statistisk Försöksplanering, SFP) for optimisation of a construction or, alternatively, a process, and also describe the concept of "Robust construction" ("Robust konstruktion")
- describe the concepts of (trustworthy and) dependebility, as well as being able to perform simple calculations, e.g. the reliability of a system
- perform risk analyses according to FTA/FMEA
- calculate capability index for machines or processes
- establish control charts (SPC)

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
