Course syllabus - Scandinavian Studies 1: Language and Society

Objectives

The objective of the course is for students to attain basic knowledge of and skills in Swedish as well as an introduction to Swedish society and culture.

Learning outcomes

After having completed the course, students are expected to be able to:
-identify and name the most important concepts of Swedish grammar and phonology
-apply their knowledge of Swedish grammar and phonetics to basic language production
-engage in simple conversation and write basic sentences and coherent texts in Swedish
-read, understand and analyse uncomplicated Swedish fiction and non-fiction
-describe a selection of phenomena related to Swedish geography, culture and society on a basic level

Course content

Course module 1: Oral presentation, 8 credits
This course offers practice in basic oral presentation in Swedish and promotes students’ ability to understand uncomplicated spoken Swedish.

Course module 2: Written communication, 7 credits
This course offers practice in basic reading and writing skills in relation to uncomplicated texts in Swedish as well as using dictionaries and other aids.
Course module 3: Language theory, 8 credits
This course offers information about the structure and characteristics of Swedish and provides basic knowledge required for reasoning about language issues.

Course module 4: Society and culture, 3 credits
The course includes studies in Swedish geography, culture and society.
Course module 5: Project, 4 credits
The course spans the entire semester, and knowledge acquired in the other course modules is used to write a project paper.

Tuition

Teaching on the course consists of lectures. Active participation in all scheduled teaching is mandatory.

SEM2, 2 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Written communication. Active participation in scheduled teaching.
SEM3, 2 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Seminar. Language theory. Active participation in scheduled teaching.
SEM4, 1 credit, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Society and culture. Active participation in scheduled teaching.
TEN1, 5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Oral presentation. Oral exam.
TEN2, 3 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Written communication. Written exam.
TEN3, 4 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Language theory. Written exam.
TEN4, 2 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Society and culture. Written exam.

For the grade Pass with Distinction, students must reach this grade on course components equivalent to at least 22 credits.

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.

The course cannot be included in Swedish as a major but can constitute part of a general degree.
