Objectives
The course gives a basic knowledge of numerical methods for the solution of mathematical problems frequently occurring in natural and engineering sciences.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student is expected to be able to
- perform error estimation for functions of severable variables and to avoid numerical cancellation in simple cases.
- solve equations and system of linear equations by numerical methods and to perform error estimations for these methods.
- define the most usual norms for vectors and matrices.
- utilize Newtons interpolation formula.
- solve overdetermined systems of equations utilizing the method of least squares and to solve linear least squares problems with different base functions.
- compute integrals by different numerical methods and to perform error estimations for these methods.
- solve initial value problems and boundary value problems for ordinary differential equations by different numerical methods and understand and perform Richardson extrapolation.
- carry through simple computation projects utilizing the software MATLAB and to write well structured reports.
Course content
Error calculus, iterative solution of equations, direct and iterative solution of systems of equations, interpolation, approximation, computation of integrals and numerical solution of differential equations. Introduction of the software MATLAB.
Tuition
Compulsary lectures with group work and compulsory laborations. The course can also be studied as a remote course via Internet. The lectures are thereby partially replaced by lecture letters with assignments.
Specific requirements
Algebra for Engineering 7,5 credits and Calculus for Engineering 7,5 credits or equivalent.
Examination
Exercise (GRU1), 1 credits, marks Pass (G)
Laboratory work (LAB1), 2.5 credits, marks Pass (G)
Examination (TEN1), 4 credits, marks 3, 4 or 5
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
