Objectives
The course gives a deeper knowledge of teaching in primary schools. Students also attain the ability to deepen their knowledge and understanding in mathematics and to be aware of the value of this knowledge.
Course content
Strategies in problem solving. A review of Algebra in order to see its structures. Some important theorems in Euclidian geometry. Statistical examination shown in Algebraic tables and diagrams. Combinatorics. Mathematical thinking in everyday situations. Central and local documents that state aims and limits for the teaching of mathematics. Mathematics for communication with parents in groups or individually. Logic, creativity and leisure as different aspects of learning mathematics. Children´s thoughts in mathematics based on their experience. The importance of language and conversation in mathematics. Pedagogical use of calculators. An initial overview of mathematical history and developing lines in conceptions of numbers and geometry.
Tuition
Classroom lessons, group works, seminars and field studies.
Specific requirements
22,5 credits in Cross Scientific Formation of Conceptions in Education or equivalent.

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
