Objectives
The main target group for this course is students training to become teachers for primary school. The main purpose of the course is that the student should expand his or her mathematical thinking and ability to apply it in everyday life as well as incraesing the understanding of the value of language and discussion in mathematics. The student should also learn to observe children with different needs and possibilities from a perspective of special pedagogy and understand how mathematics interacts with other subjects taught at school to form meaningful learning. Also the student should get a knowledge of didactical issues in mathematics of relevance to planning, performing and evaluation of teaching and learning among young children, as well as obtain an understanding of how children think and learn in relation to mathematics.
Course content
Language and symbols. Teaching strategies and ways of learning. Methods of planning, performing and evaluation of teaching and learning. Mathematics in communication with parents in group or individually. Central and local documents that puts aims and limits to the teaching of mathematics.. Teaching to children with special needs. Gender perspective of teaching and learning mathematics. Logical, creative and leasurable learnign as different aspects of learning mathematics. Pedagogical use of calculators and computers. Childrens thoughts in mathematics based on their experience. Playing and rythm in learning mathematics.

Specific requirements
At least 22,5 credits in Cross Scientific Formation of Conceptions in Education or equivalent.
Examination
Exercise (INL1), 4.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG)
Training (PRA3), 1.5 credits, marks Pass (G)
Written examination (TEN1), 1.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG)
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
