Objectives
English for Academic Purposes I is designed for members of the university or the local community who desire English proficiency training. The language of instruction is English and no prior knowledge of Swedish is expected. The course gives a review of upper-intermediate and advanced issues in English grammar and develops reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Some texts are chosen from academic contexts.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this course student should be able to:
- demonstrate an ability to use English upper-intermediate language structures and vocabulary with accuracy in written and spoken texts
- demonstrate an ability to read English texts for information with accuracy
- demonstrate an ability to discuss textual content with understanding and accuracy in spoken and written English
- be able to produce written and spoken texts which demonstrate lower level discoursal skills (clause, sentence and paragraph), good use of English grammar and English vocabulary
Course content
English language structures, grammar principles, idioms and vocabulary are reviewed and practised in grammar exercises, discussion groups, oral presentations and written assignments.

The course is taught in lectures and seminars in English.

Written and spoken assignments (INL1), 3 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG)

Grammar and vocabulary exam (TEN1) , 3 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG)
In order to earn a grade VG for the course, a student must have earned a grade of VG for INL1 and TEN1.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
