Objectives
The objective of the course is to familiarise students with scientific procedure in completing an essay or report on communication at companies, authorities or organisations.
Learning outcomes
After having completed the course, students are expected to be able to:
- define a suitable research area
- plan and carry out a study in the field of communication while applying a relevant theoretical perspective
- select, critically assess and understand sources relevant to the research project chosen, as well as relate the study to previous research
- methodically reflect upon acquired knowledge and relate it to the selected research question
- write a major essay or report in good English in accordance with the requirements of the genre
- receive and evaluate criticism and input from others as well as assess the projects of other students and offer constructive criticism
Course content
- completion of a research essay or report in English, with a special focus on communication at companies, authorities or organisations
- defense of one’s own project as well as critical response to the projects of other students
Tuition
Teaching on the course consists of seminars, tutorials, assignments and presentations, including some ICT components. Participation in all scheduled teaching is mandatory. The course or parts of the course can also be offered as distance education via a web-based learning platform. Even in the latter case, mandatory meetings may occur.
Examination
SEM1, 1 credit, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Seminar. Participation in seminars, critical assessment of the degree project of another student, and defense of one’s own project.
UPS1, 14 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Essay.
For the grade Pass with Distinction, students must reach this grade on UPS1.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
