Objectives
The objective of the course is for students to attain broad and specialized knowledge and skills in the English language, literature written in English, and related phenomena. The course includes in-depth treatment of a number of aspects of English linguistics and literary studies, while students are also offered the opportunity to specialize in a subject of their own choice and practice their scientific approach and writing skills in English through completing a major project in linguistics or literature.
The course comprises three out of the five course modules specified below. Different course modules are part of the course during different terms. However, the Degree Project in English is always required.
Learning outcomes
After having completed the course, students are expected to be able to:
for the course module Essay in English Studies:
- define a suitable research area within English linguistics or literature and select relevant sources
- critically assess and understand scientific texts
- independently plan and perform a study, write a report about it, and relate it to previous research in an appropriate way
- apply principles for academic procedure and approach
- evaluate and receive criticism and input from others as well as assess the work of others and offer constructive criticism
for the course module Literature 3, Imaginations:
- define and describe key concepts in various areas of literary theory
- read and discuss examples of literary theory and literary criticism
- read, analyze and interpret literary texts from different periods as well as define and apply relevant strategies for literary analysis and literary criticism in speech and in writing
- plan and carry out a limited literary study
for the course module Discourse Analysis:
- identify common methods in linguistic discourse analysis and describe the way in which they are applied
- describe key concepts in discourse analysis and apply the methods of discourse analysis to oral and written texts of different kinds and different genres
- describe the scientific procedure of discourse analysis and the way in which this approach informs the field of knowledge
for the course module American Literature and Ecocriticism:
- define and describe key concepts of ecocriticism
- read, analyse and interpret literary texts from various periods
- read and discuss a selection of texts within literary theory and literary criticism
- reflect upon and describe the research methods of ecocriticism
- plan and carry out a limited ecocritical study
for the course module Social and Regional Variation:
- define and use key concepts regarding social and regional variation
- reflect upon the use of English among various geographical and social groups
- identify the traits that characterise varieties of English
- describe how research is done in the area and carry out simple linguistic investigations independently
- analyse spoken and written language samples with regard to social and regional variation
Course content
for the course module Essay in English Studies:
- completion of a research project in a specific area of English linguistics or literary studies
- general and subject-specific scientific methods for research and writing
- defense of one’s own essay as well as critical response to the essays of other students
for the course module Literature 3, Imaginations:
- contemporary canonical works of fiction in different genres
- introduction to literary theory and selected examples of literary criticism
for the course module Discourse Analysis:
- overview over linguistic discourse analysis
- specialisation in at least two areas of discourse analysis
- textual analysis
for the course module American Literature and Ecocriticism:
- North American literature, both canonical works and contemporary texts, as well as selected examples of theoretical and applied ecocriticism
for the course module Social and Regional Variation:
- English in different parts of the world
- linguistic variation between genders, social classes and other groups, with a special focus on English
Tuition
Teaching on the course consists of seminars, tutorials, assignments and presentations, including some ICT components. Participation in all scheduled teaching is mandatory. The course or parts of the course can also be offered as distance education via a web-based learning platform. Even in the latter case, mandatory meetings may occur.
Specific requirements
English 1, 30 credits, and English 2, 30 credits (of which at least 22.5 credits passed at the start of the course), or the equivalent.
Examination
INL1, 2.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Literature 3, Imaginations. Essay.
INL2, 5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Literature 3, Imaginations. Portfolio of oral and written analyses.
INL3, 2.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Discourse Analysis. Oral and written assignments.
INL4, 2.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), American Literature and Ecocriticism. Essay.
INL5, 5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), American Literature and Ecocriticism. Portfolio of oral analyses documented in writing.
INL6, 2.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Social and Regional Variation. Oral and written assignments.
SEM1, 2.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Discourse Analysis. Preparation for and active participation in course activities.
SEM2, 2.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Social and Regional Variation. Preparation for and active participation in course activities.
TEN1, 2.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Discourse Analysis. Written exam.
TEN2, 2.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Social and Regional Variation. Take-home exam.
UPS1, 15 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Essay in English Studies. Essay and critical response.
Which of the forms of examination listed above apply for a given term depends on which three course modules the course comprises that term.
All forms of examination require students to express themselves in correct and idiomatic English.
For the grade Pass with Distinction on the course as a whole, students must reach this grade on course components equivalent to at least 23.5 credits.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
