Objectives
The objective of the course is for students to attain enhanced communicative skills in spoken and written academic English. Another course objective is to offer a historical perspective on language, society and culture.
Learning outcomes
After having completed the course, students are expected to be able to:
- describe the most important sociocultural aspects of American and British history and relate them to today’s language and culture
- analyse and produce spoken and written academic texts in English
- apply strategies for information searches and source use

Tuition
The course offers conditions for both explicit and implicit learning. Teaching on the course consists of lectures, seminars, discussions, tutorials and assignments, including a considerable ICT component. Active participation in all scheduled teaching is mandatory.
Specific requirements
English 1, 30 credits (of which at least 22.5 credits passed at the start of the course), or the equivalent.
Examination
INL1, 7 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Language in Context. Written assignments.
SEM1, 1.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Language in Context. Preparation for and active participation in scheduled teaching.
TEN1, 6.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Language in Context. Written exam.
For the grade Pass, assignments must be completed in good English in terms of style, grammar and idiomatic usage.
For the grade Pass with Distinction, students must reach this grade on INL1 and TEN1
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
