Literature lists

Course literature is preliminary up to 8 weeks before course start. Course literature can be valid over several semesters.

Objectives

The objective of the course is for students to attain enhanced communicative skills in spoken and written academic English. Another course objective is to offer a historical perspective on language, society and literature, or, as an alternative, knowledge about the culture and working life of an English-speaking country where the student takes part in elective practical training. The course also offers both broad and specialised studies in linguistics and literature.

Learning outcomes

After having completed the course, students are expected to be able to:

- analyse and produce texts in English, in different genres and in both speech and writing
- apply strategies for information searches and source use

for course module 2, Language in Context
- describe the most important sociocultural aspects of American and British history and relate them to today’s language and culture
- analyse and produce spoken and written academic texts in English
- apply strategies for information searches and source use

for course module 3, Literature 2
- describe important time periods and genres applicable to literature written in English
- apply knowledge of literary and historical periods and their characteristic traits when reading and analysing individual literary texts
- use scientific sources and relevant methods to support interpretations of literary texts in speech and writing

for course module 4, Linguistics 2
- define and use key concepts related to the study of human language, especially English
- describe and discuss key linguistic theories

Course content

The course comprises three of the four modules specified below, where Modules 1 and 2 are alternatives to each other. Linguistics and Literature are always part of the course, however.

Module 1: Language in the Workplace, 15 credits
- Communicative and sociocultural competence
- Text genres
- Data collection and analysis
- Information searches and source use

Module 2: Language in Context, 15 credits
- British and American history
- Communicative competence in an academic context
- Information searches and source use

Module 3: Literature 2, 7.5 credits
- Overview over British and American literary history
- Literary genres
- Introduction to methods in comparative literature

Module 4: Linguistics 2, 7.5 credits
- Introduction to a broad range of linguistic areas, with a focus on the English language

Tuition

The course offers conditions for both explicit and implicit learning. Teaching on the course consists of lectures, seminars, discussions, tutorials and assignments, including a considerable ICT component. In course module 2, a great part of the course involves distance learning in an English-speaking country. Active participation in all scheduled teaching is mandatory.

English 1, 30 credits (of which at least 22.5 credits passed at the start of the course), or the equivalent.

INL1, 7 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Language in Context. Written assignments.
INL2, 6 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Literature 2. Oral and written assignments.
INL3, 1.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Linguistics 2. Oral and written assignments.
NÄR1, 1 credit, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Language in the Workplace. Participation in scheduled teaching.
PM01, 5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Language in the Workplace. Paper on sociocultural aspects of the country where practical training takes place.
PRA1, 5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Language in the Workplace. Practical training at a workplace in an English-speaking country.
PRO1, 4 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Language in the Workplace. Written project report.
SEM1, 1.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Language in Context. Preparation for and active participation in scheduled teaching.
SEM2, 1.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Literature 2. Preparation for and active participation in scheduled teaching.
SEM3, 1.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG), Linguistics 2. Preparation for and active participation in scheduled teaching.

For the grade Pass, assignments must be completed in good English in terms of style, grammar and idiomatic usage.

For the grade Pass with Distinction, the student must reach this grade on course components equivalent to at least 23.5 credits.

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
