Objectives
The aim of the course is for students to develop their knowledge of and skills in English and language education in order for them to be able to teach English on the appropriate level, in accordance with the intentions expressed in the applicable regulatory documents. The course further aims to lay the foundations for a critical and reflective attitude in the students and provide the tools necessary for them to continually develop their role as a teacher.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students are expected to be able to:
(with regard to the Linguistics 1 module)
- give an account of core concepts in lexical semantics and the semantic relationships between words
- give an account of core concepts in phonetics and apply the International Phonetic Alphabet to transcribe English
- identify syntactic structures and apply relevant terminology to analyze phrases, clauses and sentences
- give an account of pedagogical perspectives on linguistic form and relate these to practical applications in school
(with regard to the Literature 1 module)
- carry out and discuss basic literary analyses
- define and apply basic terminology and methods for literary analysis in English
- give an account of pedagogical perspectives on reading and literature and relate these to practical applications in school
Course content
The course comprises two modules worth 7.5 credits each.
Module 1, Linguistics 1:
- phonetics
- lexical semantics
- syntax
- pedagogical perspectives on the form and function of language
- field studies
Module 2, Literature 1:
- contemporary literature, in different genres, from several English-speaking countries
- introduction to literary analysis and literary criticism
- pedagogical perspectives on reading and literature in school
- field studies
Tuition
The teaching and learning activities offer the preconditions for explicit as well implicit learning and include lectures, seminars, discussions, home assignments and tasks to be done by the students in class. Participation in all scheduled activities and assignments is mandatory. The course is partly based on ICT.

English B, Modern language step 3 or Modern language 3.
Examination
Literature 1. Spoken and written assignments (INL1), 2.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
Linguistics 1. Preparation for and active participation in scheduled activities and field studies (SEM1), 1.5 credits, mark Pass (G).
Literature 1. Preparation for and active participation in scheduled activities and field studies (SEM2), 1 credit, mark Pass (G).
Linguistics 1. Written exam (TEN1), 4 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
Literature 1. Written exam (TEN2), 4 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
Linguistics 1. Exercises (ÖVN1), 2 credits, mark Pass (G).
For a Pass with distinction (VG) on the course as a whole, the student needs to have earned that mark for a minimum of 10.5 credits.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.

The course cannot be included in a degree together with other courses in English at level G1N.
