Objectives
The course gives knowledge and understanding of the modern view of efficient process and product development based on and focusing Lean production and how the development is influenced by global competition and other factors. Improvement work through Lean with its development and its philosophy is to be understood. Chosen methods and tools for development e.g. Value Stream Mapping and Pareto Analysis, to be studied and trained.
Learning outcomes
The student must be able to present and explain her:
- understanding of the philosophy and the development of Lean production
- ability to use methodology and tools used for improvement actions, e.g. PDCA, 5S, Ishikawa Analysis, Process Charts and Value Stream Analysis
- understanding of efficient product development and its impact on a company's competitiveness
- understanding of the importance of a holistic approach to efficient process and product development
- show understanding of the importance of styling in product design and styling as a competitive tool
Course content
- History and development of Lean Production (Toyota Production System)
- Methodology and tools for improvement e.g. PDCA, 5S and Ishikawa Analysis
- Process Charts and Value Stream Analysis
- Standardization/ best practice and bottlenecks
- Efficient process and product development in a global perspective
- Product design and development in a holistic view
Tuition
The forms for education will mainly be literature studies, individual work, group work, lectures, reports and presentations.
Specific requirements
Bachelor degree in Information Design, Innovation Technology or Product and Process Development. Also required are upper-secondary English course A and upper-secondary advanced-level Swedish course B.
Examination

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
