Objectives
To give knowledge of basic thermodynamics and fluid mechanics in order to understand how thrust and shaft power are generated in aircraft power plants, with emphasis on turbine engines for aeroplanes. This knowledge will enable basic performance analysis of aircraft engines.
Course content
Overview of aircraft power plants, their historical development and use. Categories of aircraft engines. One-dimensional fluid equations for turbine engine performance calculations. Definition and calculation of thrust, efficiencies and other parameters for ideal engines. Description and basic analysis of non-ideal engine processes, including air intake, compressor, combustion chamber, after-burner and exhaust nozzles.
Tuition
Lectures, calculation tasks and laboratory test.
Specific requirements
Introduction to Aeronautical Engineering, 7,5 credits, Physics of Heat and Physics of Waves, basic course, 7,5 credits or equivalent.
Examination
Laboratory work (LAB1). Laboratory test, Exercise, Participation in practical work., 1.5 credits, marks Pass (G)
Written examination (TEN1), 6 credits, marks 3, 4 or 5
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board.
