Objectives
The aim for the course is to give general understanding of the impact of competitive production and logistics in industrial operations. Participants shall gain understanding of the development of production and logistics over time and the present challenge for Swedish industry and shall also make reflections over coming challenges within the subject.
Learning outcomes
The student must be able to present her:
- understanding of production and logistics systems and the effects of outsourcing
- knowledge of an historical overview of industrial production
- understanding of competitive and efficient production
- understandning of the key factors necessary for the follow up of a modern production system
- understanding of different future production concepts
Course content
Understanding of production and logistics:
- what is a production system including logistics
- what is the value of "own" production
- reasons for outsourcing - distributed production
Historical overview of industrial production:
- mass production
- the Japanese evolution - quality and lean
- sociotechnical systems
- needs for flexibility - modern production examples
- present trends
Competitive and efficient production:
- important deliverables/ key figures to achieve competitive production systems
- development of the concepts of productivity, quality, delivery capacity, flexibility and availability
- steps towards improved competitiveness, including maintenance for availability
- collaboration between the processes for production and product development
- logistics and materials handling - distributed production
Tuition
The teaching will essentially include classroom lectures, group work and individual home work.
Specific requirements
Innovative Production and logistics 7,5 credits or equivalent and a Bachelor's degree in the fields of technology from an institution of higher education of three years or more, equivalent to at least 180 credits with at least 22,5 credits in mathematics/applied mathematics or a Bachelor's degree in the fields of economics, business or science from an institution of higher education of three years or more, equivalent to at least 180 credits with at least 22,5 credits in mathematics/applied mathematics with one year of working experience in the industry. In addition Swedish course B/Swedish course 2 and English course A/English course 5 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish course B/Swedish course 2.

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
