Objectives
The objective of the course is to provide students with knowledge of design theories and industrial design from a historical perspective, and to develop the concept of design methodology further in practical work.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students are expected to:
- be able to identify and describe the application of the concept of design brief
- be able to describe how design methodology is used to run projects
- be able to give an account of the basics of modern design history and theory
- have a basic understanding of how the design process can be applied in a practical project

Tuition
Teaching and learning take place by means of lectures (including guest lectures) and supervised project work. There will be presentations of partial and final results in front of the other course participants. The projects will be carried out individually or in pairs.
Specific requirements
Innovativ design I 7.5 credits, Teknologi 7.5 credits, as well as upper-secondary English and upper-secondary advanced-level Swedish.
Examination
Exercise. Hand-in assignment, exercise: physical model of a project., 3 credits, marks 3, 4 or 5
Exercise. Hand-in assignment, exercise: project portfolio. The report is to describe the entire innovation and design process behind the product, from a holistic and scientific perspective, and contain an individual, personal reflection., 4.5 credits, marks 3, 4 or 5
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
