Objectives
The objective of the course is to provide knowledge of, and skills in, the basics of solid mechanics and machine elements, which in turn form part of the foundation of engineering.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students are expected to:
- be able to calculate the deformation of materials at different stress levels
- be able to calculate the bending of beams, the risk of breakage in struts, as well as the risk of fatigue in connection with different types of stress
- be familiar with main stresses and breakage hypotheses in connection with different types of load, as well as dimensioning to prevent breakage
- be able to work with the concept of safety factor in connection with different types of constructions and stresses
- be able to name commonly occurring machine elements and give an account of their functions
- be able to choose and dimension machine elements for inclusion in mechanical constructions, in accordance with specified functional requirements
Course content
- the elastic line for beams; basic cases of beam bending; statically undetermined beam problems
- breakage
- fatigue
- multi-axis stress conditions and main stresses
- breakage hypotheses for static and dynamic stresses
- dimensioning with a safety factor
- bonds
- layers
- gears
- clutches and brakes
- tribology
Tuition
Teaching and learning take place by means of lectures and seminars. Hand-in assignments support the learning process while, at the same time, they are part of the examination of the course.
Specific requirements
The entry requirements comprise introductory courses in manufacturing technology, materials technology, solid mechanics, and mechanics (statics).
Examination
Exercise. Individual hand-in assignment on solid mechanics., 1.5 credits, marks Pass (G)
Exercise. Individual hand-in assignment on machine elements., 1.5 credits, marks Pass (G)
Examination. Written exam on materials technology., 2 credits, marks 3, 4 or 5
Examination. Written exam on solid mechanics, 2.5 credits, marks 3, 4 or 5
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
