Objectives
The course shall give the student basic knowledge of theories about innovative organizations and processes.
Learning outcomes
After the completion of the course the student should have gained an overview of the field of organizational theories and it´s multitude of perspectives and disciplines. The student should also have gained deeper understanding of different forms of innovative organizing and be able to conduct a discussion that differentiates between episodic and continuous change, innovative processes on organizational, group and individual level, as well as formal and informal organization. The student should also have apprehended terms like virtual organizations, organizational strategy, organizational culture and organizational learning respectively how they relate to the organizations innovative capability.
Course content
Questions that the course addresses includes:
- What is an innovative organization respectively innovative organizing?
- What patterns can we identify within those organizations that are considered innovative?
- How can different business environments effect different organizations needs for innovation?
- What types of organizational changes are there?
- What characterizes innovative strategies?
- What are the most common organizational perspectives, and how can they help us understand innovation better?
- What theoretical concepts and terms will help us to best understand organizational abilities for innovation?
- Your questions.

The course includes lectures, practical exercises, individual and group assignments, seminars and one or more larger presentations.

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
