Course syllabus - Signals and Systems

Objectives

The course objectives are to give the student knowledge about different kinds of signals and how they can be processed to enhance a certain wanted characteristic. The transformation between time continous and time discrete systems is aslo an important aspect that will be covered.

Learning outcomes

Know different types of signals and be able to classify given signals. Know and be able to use the sampling theorem. Know the theory behind frequence analysis and synthesis and be able to apply them on signals. Know the most common modulation techniques. Know the theory behind Fourier series, Fourier transform (continous and discrete), convolution, Z transform and Laplace transform. Be able to apply all these theories on given signals and analyze and critically judge the effects of signal processing on real signals.

Course content

Signal theory, Sampling, Frequency analysis/synthesis, Modulation, Transient signals, Filter, Frequency function, Fourier series, Fourier transform, Discrete Fourier transform, Oversampling of A/D and D/A converters, Time discrete systems, Causality, Convolution, Z-transform, FIR and IIR filters, Time Continous systems, Laplace transform.

Specific requirements

Electronic systems 7,5 ECTS credits and Differential equations and transform methods 7,5 ECTS credits or corresponding. In addition Swedish course B/Swedish course 2 and English course A/English course 5 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish course B/Swedish course 2.

Examination

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
