Objectives
A lot of today´s technical equipment contains electronics of some kind. Large and complex electronic systems are vital parts of cars, airplanes, trains and computers. It is therefore important that any engineer well knows the fundamentals of electronics to be able to work with systems within any area of engineering. This is a basic course that will give the basic knowledge about electronic components and circuits. The course covers both basic analogue and digital electronics.
Learning outcomes
After passing the course the student should be able to:
- Apply electronic circuit laws to analyze DC circuits.
- Understand the ideal OP-amplifier and know it´s practical limitations.
- Identify and analyze standard OP-amp circuits.
- Know the basic digital components.
- Use binary and hexadecimal number system.
- Understand inductance and capacitance and be able to analyze transient behaviour of circuits containing these components.
- Analyze frequency characteristics of resonant circuits.
- In theory analyze the function of circuits.
- Reason about the practical applications of a circuit.
- Use measurement instruments to practically analyze circuits.
- Create circuits in practice for a given function.
- Analyze and value their solutions.
Course content
The course covers basic electronics, both analogue and digital. A short introduction to electro physics is first given followed by components like resistors, inductors, capacitors, OP-amps, gates and latches. The course covers both constant and transient signal component behaviour as well as frequency characteristics of circuits.
Tuition
Lectures and compulsory labs.
Requirements
General entry requirements
Examination
Exercise (LAB1), laboratory work, 1.5 credits, marks Pass (G)
Examination (TEN1), 6 credits, marks 3, 4 or 5
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
