Objectives
The course is part of a master program in Intelligent Embedded Systems, using project based learning (PBL) as the main pedagogical idea. The program contains three project courses, with increasing volume both in terms of students' own efforts as well as the number of students per project. This in turn means that the complexity of each project increases.
This course is the second of these three courses. The aim is that for half a semester of full-time and in groups of 5-6 students in collaboration with one or possibly two companies identify an application with the characteristic that multiple technologies can be applied, and that students get a better understanding of designing systems.
Learning outcomes
The project will give students a better understanding of the technologies that are important in the kind of project that each specific student group is working with. This can vary, but typical areas are
- Measurement systems
- Sensor systems
- Communication, Bluetooth, ZigBee and CAN
- Real-time scheduling
- Learning systems
- Robust electronics and computer systems
Being able to limit the specifications of the system to be developed. The specifications will be judged in the grading of the project.
Being able to do a WBS (Work Breakdown Structure), ie to divide the work that the project will include
To adequately document both the technical progress of implementations as well as monitoring the progress of the project (requirements spec to the WBS into work plans, test plans, any document for certification, meeting minutes, risk assessments, delivery schedules and delivery documentation).
Course content
At the beginning of the course each project a concise (sometimes a bit longer) description of a relevant problem is given. In conjunction with one or perhaps two companies (although purely in-house academic projects can occur, backed up by a company). The project, in association with the company (-ies) draw up a definite requirements specification.
The work will be divided into smaller parts, and a plan for the work has to be developed which will also include a simple risk assessment and this shall be submitted for review.
The work to be carried out, according to their plan, and final report, which describes the design, implementation, testing procedures and analysis of results against established goals and requirements. A final prototype or similar together with a full report will be handed in.
Tuition
The course / project is conducted as a full-time job, and if it is done in collaboration with a company, the project can be located at the premises of the company or at the university. It requires attendance every day and all day. The course is given in English.
Specific requirements
Embedded Systems I 7,5 ECTS credits and Project in Embedded Systems 7,5 ECTS credits or corresponding. In addition Swedish course B/Swedish course 2 and English course A/English course 5 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish course B/Swedish course 2.
Examination
Project (PRO1), 7.5 credits, marks 3, 4 or 5
Project (PRO2), 7.5 credits, marks 3, 4 or 5
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
