Objectives
The aim is for students to increase their knowledge of the latest scientific findings on the etiology, diagnosis and treatment of psychological disorders. In addition students will acquire knowledge of the regulatory documents in society that regulate psychiatric practice.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course students will be able to take account of sex/gender perspectives and:
- identify and distinguish symptom pictures that can be attributed to specific psychological disorders
- distinguish symptoms that may be related to undesirable effects of treatment
- identify and appraise psychopathological states in patients needing specific care
- describe and take into account the links between the impact of psychological disorders on the existential world of patients and their possibilities of leading a life that promotes health
- use different models for explaining the etiology, diagnosis and treatment of psychological disorders
- set priorities for caring measures that promote the individual´s capacity to lead a life that promotes health.
In addition students will be able to:
- search for, analyse and evaluate research reports that offer medical evidence in the specialist area
- describe and account for the regulatory documents in society that affect the organisation of care in this specialist area.

The teaching is based on the students´ active search for knowledge. Teaching takes the form of text study, compulsory lectures and seminars at which these texts are discussed and also study assignments individually or in groups and the use of webCT.
Examination
Exercise. Individual written paper on a selected area within the course., 2 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG)
Participation. Compulsory attendance at 80% of lectures and seminars. Compensation required for excess absence., 1.5 credits, marks Pass (G)
Examination. Individual written examination., 4 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG)
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
