Objectives
The objective of the course is for students to gain increased knowledge of factors determining health, unequal preconditions for health, as well as health effects, from a global perspective.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students are expected to be able to:
1 give an account of factors determining health from a global perspective
2 give an account of regulatory and policy documents of importance for global health
3 reflect on how globalization affects the global health situation
4 use relevant databases to search for and give an account of information regarding country-specific health conditions
5 give proof of a basic understanding of the relationship between health and ill-health in terms of socioeconomic conditions, gender and ethnicity
6 present underlying causes for different countries’ health development from a global perspective

Course content
Core definitions, concepts as well as regulatory and policy documents in the field of global health
The effect of globalization on health situations in different countries
Global challenges in the public health area
Social capital and the Status Syndrome
Working with databases regarding health statistics
Group work on a specific country’s health development
Poster production
Tuition
Teaching and learning will take place in the form of lectures, individual and group assignments, as well as seminars.
Specific requirements
30 credits in public health science, of which 15 credits in “Basic Public Health Science”, or the equivalent.
Examination
Group assignment (GRU1), 3 credits: oral, written and poster presentation, regarding learning objective 5-6. Grade Pass (G).
Group assignment (SEM1), 0.5 credit: active participation in working seminar, regarding learning objective 4. Grade Pass (G).
Examination (TEN1), 4 credits: individual written exam regarding learning objectives 1-3. Grades Pass (G) och Pass with distinction (VG).
For the grade Pass with distinction (VG) on the course as a whole, this grade is required for TEN1. For more information, see the study guidelines.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
