Objectives
The aim of this course is to give an understanding of basic methods for statistical analysis of economic data, and the ability to use these methods to test hypotheses about these data and to estimate parameters of economic models. Students also learn some ways to test if the methods are applicable to a specific data set, and what to do when this is not the case. The focus is on the linear regression model.
Learning outcomes
After completed course the student shall be able to
- demonstrate knowledge of statistical theory and methodology, especially related to frequently occurring problems in economic applications
- apply the classical linear regression model
- specify simple econometric models
- estimate the economic models for cross-sectional and time series data
- interpret the results of an existing estimation
- account for the limitations and potential sources of error in the analysis
- present the results of the tests.
Course content
General description of econometric models and their application in economics. Linear regression models with one or more explanatory variables. Estimation and inference. Heteroscedasticity and autocorrelation. Multicollinearity. Measurement error. Dummy variables as explanatory / dependent variables.
Tuition
Lectures, demonstrations and computer labs.
Specific requirements

It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
