If you need to postpone your studies

If you are unable to commence your studies at the time you have planned, you may apply for deferment of studies, in other words permission to postpone the start of your studies, if there are what is called special grounds.

Such special grounds could for example be:

  • social
  • medical
  • or other circumstances such as care of children, military or civilian service, student union duties, military basic training, employments in the Swedish Armed Forces or postponed leave according to the Swedish law of an employee’s right to leave of absence for educational purposes.

The period of deferment may amount to a maximum of 18 months provided there are no valid reasons for a longer period. If you are granted deferment it is important to remember that the deferment is valid on condition that the course or programme is to be arranged and that the entry requirements remain unchanged.

To claim your place you must reapply for the course or programme for the semester indicated in your deferment decision. You must also submit a copy of the decision to universityadmissions.se in connection with your application. This must be done no later than the application deadline. You may not claim your place during the period of deferment.
