Pre-study on policyholders' perspectives on changing lifestyle habits

Länsförsäkringar Sörmland is collaborating with researchers at the Center of Welfare Change to gather data from Swedish policyholders to guide the development of a new digital health product. The project will be the first in Sweden to establish evidence for such a product.

This is what we shall do

We aim to identify the types and levels of compensation that potential or current policyholders would be willing to receive from an insurance company in exchange for changing their current lifestyle habits (e.g., exercise, diet, tobacco and alcohol consumption).

The study will also explore what types of information about their current lifestyle habits potential and current policyholders would be willing to share with an insurance company to access this compensation, and how this could be done.

Goal

The results will provide a foundation to guide the development of a potential prototype intervention of a digital health product or service for Länsförsäkringar Sörmland's customers.

The project will be a leader in establishing evidence for such interventions in Sweden and will also contribute to a broader knowledge base internationally to support the prevention of non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, and chronic respiratory diseases.

Therefore, Länsförsäkringar aims to develop a digital health product

Non-communicable diseases in Sweden, such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, and chronic respiratory diseases, cause substantial societal costs that also impact the insurance industry. These diseases can partially be mitigated through changes in lifestyle habits, but many interventions show low levels of long-term adherence.

Insurance-based interventions to reduce the disease burden exist in other countries but are lacking in Sweden. Certain health programs implemented by the insurance industry in several countries, notably the Vitality program, have demonstrated effective and sustainable results in large-scale studies. Recently, the integration of health technology solutions has been shown to enhance the positive effects of these interventions.
