About us
Center for Welfare Change is MDU's newest platform for collaboration, where the public sector, academia, industry, and civil society come together to develop the future of welfare based on the possibilities of health and welfare technology.
A new arena with deep-rooted experience and expertise
On May 30, 2023, the Center for Welfare Change was inaugurated. Although the platform is new, MDU has over 20 years of experience in health and welfare technology research across a wide range of fields. This research is represented within all of the university's research areas.
Additionally, since its establishment in 1977, MDU has always worked closely with the surrounding society. Over the years, the university has developed a unique network of societal actors and is now recognized as one of the leading universities in Sweden for collaboration.
Since the inauguration of the Center for Welfare Change, we have worked to establish structures for interdisciplinary research and development within the field of health and welfare technology, where researchers engage with all stakeholders in welfare.
Goal
Our goal is for the center to be nationally leading and internationally recognized within the field of health and welfare technology within a ten-year period (by 2034).
Societal challenges demand a transformation of welfare – and collaboration
Swedes are living longer. This is fundamentally positive, but it also places higher demands on society as fewer people must support more. To meet this challenge, we as individuals need to be healthier, more active, and remain independent for a longer period of life.
Welfare systems, in turn, need to develop new systems, products, and services that both maintain and enhance our capabilities while also streamlining operations.
Health and welfare technology can contribute to this, but it requires collaboration among all stakeholders within the welfare and health sectors. The common arena that was previously missing now exists.
The name Center for Welfare Change
The name Center for Welfare Change effectively reflects the fundamental changes needed in welfare systems to address the challenges of an aging population requiring more care, combined with a shrinking workforce. It highlights the necessity of more than just technology—it’s about transforming how we work, innovate, and collaborate to ensure sustainable welfare solutions.
