Core Plant Excellence

Summary

Swedish manufacturing organizations have implemented the concept of core plants to achieve operational excellence and competitive production development in response to globalisation. A core plant acts as a liaison for technology, process, and work method developments, coordinates global collaboration, and designs strategies for effective knowledge exchange between factories and management. However, implementing a core plant also entails major challenges.

Purpose of the project

Due to the challenges in operating as a core plant, the purpose of the COPE research project was to increase knowledge on how Swedish manufacturing companies can preserve and strengthen their role as core plants with undiminished competitive capabilities. Thus, the project aimed to improve the competitiveness of the Swedish manufacturing industry and thereby support manufacturing networks in competitive production development.

Partners in the research project

The research project was run between 2016 and 2019 in collaboration between Mälardalen University and Jönköping University and with funding from The Knowledge Foundation. Industrial partners in the three-year project were Alfa Laval, AstraZeneca, Bombardier Transportation, GKN Aerospace, SKF, Volvo Cars, Volvo Construction Equipment, and Volvo Group Trucks Operations.
