MDU gets its first female professor of mathematics

Mälardalen University has appointed Ying Ni as professor of mathematics and applied mathematics – the first woman ever to reach professorship level in this subject at the university.

Ying Ni completed her PhD in mathematics and applied mathematics at MDU in 2011 and has since built up a strong research profile in financial mathematics. She has published around thirty scientific articles, supervised several doctoral students and led the research group Financial Engineering, Statistics and Stochastic Processes.

In addition to her research, Ying Ni is known for her strong commitment to teaching. She has developed courses at bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD levels, been responsible for programmes such as Analytical Finance and Financial Engineering, and actively worked for the development and internationalisation of education.

Ying Ni's promotion to professor is seen as an important step for both the subject and the university. The academy particularly emphasises her role as a role model for women in a male-dominated field.

I am both proud and very happy that Ying Ni is now with us as a professor. Ying has had a long career at MDU and will do a lot of good for the department, both in mathematics and at the university as a whole, says David Carlsson, Dean of School at the School of Education, Culture and Communication at MDU.
