Engineering education within planetary boundaries

Climate change, resource scarcity and increasing pressure on Earth’s ecosystems place new demands on future engineers. Addressing these challenges requires technical expertise combined with an understanding of the planet’s ecological limits.

The Bachelor Programme in Environmental Engineering within Planetary Boundaries at Mälardalen University is the first of its kind in Sweden to be based on the scientific framework Planetary Boundaries. The framework defines the ecological limits within which humanity can develop without compromising the stability of the Earth system.

Closely connected to current research

The programme combines engineering science, systems thinking and sustainability science, providing students with tools to address complex environmental challenges in areas such as climate, energy, water and resource management. All courses are closely connected to current research and real-world societal challenges.

To succeed in achieving a genuine green transition, we need engineers who understand how environmental, climate and sustainability issues are interconnected within complex systems, rather than viewing them as separate parts. This programme combines engineering, research and hands-on learning to address precisely those needs,” says Yahya Jani, Associate Professor of Environmental Engineering and Programme Director at Mälardalen University.

Strong international relevance

Through project-based learning, laboratory work and collaboration with industry and the public sector, students develop practical skills as well as a holistic understanding of sustainable development.
