Extended Reality (XR) is a rapidly developing technology that has grown somewhat in the shadow of AI, yet is already demonstrating significant societal value. Next week, Adam Palmquist, Senior Lecturer in Interaction Design at Mälardalen University (MDU), will travel to Munich to share a Nordic perspective on Extended Reality.

Adam Palmquist, Senior Lecturer in Interaction Design at Mälardalen University (MDU), has been invited to take part in the international conference Next Level Europe: Extended Reality in Munich.

The conference, organised by the Bavarian Industry Association in collaboration with the Bavarian Ministry for Digital Affairs and Technology, brings together leading European stakeholders in XR technology – one of the world’s most patent-intensive fields within digitalisation.

A European Focus on Extended Reality

The aim of the conference is to highlight how Extended Reality (XR) is being developed and applied across Europe, and to explore how countries and research environments can collaborate to strengthen the European ecosystem for digital innovation.

Adam Palmquist will contribute with a Nordic perspective on XR technology – a field already being used in areas such as the automotive industry, robotics, healthcare and simulation in high-risk environments.

“XR technology serves as a bridge between the digital and physical worlds. It enables new ways of learning, training and collaborating, especially in contexts where doing so in real life would be costly or risky,” he says.

MDU as Part of the European Research Arena

MDU’s participation in international contexts such as this reinforces the university’s role as an active knowledge partner in the digital transformation. Research in interaction design, game technology and digitalisation is helping to develop new tools for learning, industrial innovation and societal benefit.

Facts: What is Extended Reality (XR)?

Extended Reality (XR) is an umbrella term for technologies that combine real and virtual environments – including Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR).

Today, XR technologies are used in a wide range of sectors – from healthcare and industry to education and culture – to create new ways of visualising, training and experiencing complex situations.
