An increasing number of international students are becoming aware of Mälardalen University's advanced-level programs, specifically our master's programs. Recent figures show an 82 % increase in the total number of applicants, with a remarkable 133 % rise in the number of first-choice applicants, compared to the same programs in 2024.

Linking to reality – and the future

The Master's program in Global Strategy and Management at Mälardalen University has seen the largest increase, with a 216% rise in first-choice applicants.

This growth can be understood in light of the rapid changes taking place in the global business world. Companies and organizations must navigate geopolitical shifts, digital transformation, and sustainability demands. To succeed, competent and responsible leaders who understand and can act in this new reality are needed.

“We are seeing a growing demand for leaders who understand how globalization, digitalization, and sustainability challenges affect business decisions. Our master's program equips students with the skills to meet these demands and lead organizations towards a sustainable future,” says Sara Melén Hånell, Program Manager.

Sustainable business strategies

This is exactly the need the Master's program in Global Strategy and Management addresses. The program is designed to educate the leaders, analysts, and management consultants of the future who want to tackle these challenges and create sustainable business strategies in an ever-changing world.

“The program has been developed in collaboration with international companies and organizations, and has strong ties to our research in sustainability, digitalization, and globalization. It's truly exciting that we have so many applicants, as it confirms that there is significant interest in these issues from students around the world,” says Sara Melén Hånell.

Aligning with National Trends

Figures from the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) show that MDU is not the only institution that has experienced a strong application period for international programs. Interest in international education is rising significantly for the fall semester of 2025. Overall, the number of applicants for international courses and programs is up by 16%, and there’s nearly a 17% increase for master’s programs. This increase is particularly noticeable among those paying the application fee.

The program is now open for applications from Swedish students as well.
