Great success for opera students during the year

Several students on the Chamber Opera Programme at the Academy of Music and Opera at Mälardalen University (MDH) have been recognised for their singing abilities over the past year. In tough competition, they have received prestigious scholarships and have been selected for international opera stages.

One person who has been impressed by the quality of the University's opera singers is Nils Spangenberg, the CEO and Artistic Director of Vadstena-akademien. To be able to participate in productions by Vadstena-akademien is a dream for singers both in Sweden and internationally. Nils Spangenberg has heard singers from the Academy of Music and Opera at MDH in connection with the international auditions held each year for the productions.

– The singing education at the Academy of Music and Opera at Mälardalen University is consistent and of high quality. The students are always well prepared and take on the task with professionalism and seriousness. They are distinguished by the fact that the singers' voices are good and that they possess a sound singing technique, no matter at what stage they are at, says Nils Spangenberg.

There was great competition for the Vadstena-akademien’s 2021 Baroque opera. Around 150 applicants from all over the world took part in the audition.

– The quality of most applicants was very high and consistent and there were several singers from the Academy of Music and Opera at Mälardalen University who, in the final stage, were discussed as prospective candidates for one of the seven roles we were looking for singers for. All the applicants from MDH were well prepared and were, in comparison to singers from other corresponding Swedish institutions, placed very high on the ranking list. In this tough competition, MDH student Karin Mobacke was one of the few selected singers to be given one of the leading roles in an ensemble of top singers from countries such as Italy, Russia, and Austria, says Nils Spangenberg.
